Rock Challenge Winners 2015
A dance and drama production described as ‘slick’ and ‘professional’ has seen our Academy judged the premier performers of the south – for the second year running! On Saturday 20 June, our students swept the board at the Rock Challenge Southern Premier Final Rock Challenge – the competition that pits only the top performing schools in the South against each other. Our performance, called PERFECTLY MIS-placed not only won overall first prize, but also 15 separate categories, including performance skill, drama skill, stage crew, spirit of Rock Challenge and choreography.
One judge said: “That performance can be described with four words – ‘rehearsed’, ‘slick’, ‘polished’ and ‘professional’.”
More than 100 students created, performed and staged PERFECTLY MIS-placed – a tale of how love overcomes prejudice. The story centres on a world called ‘Perfectia’ where only perfect people are allowed to live and others, known as ‘misfits,’ are banished. When a perfect person and a misfit fall in love the ‘perfector’ fights to release all misfits and allow everyone to live in harmony.
Executive principal, Gill Blanshard, said “Everyone involved in the production, from the stage crew to the makeup artists to the performers, have put their heart and souls into this and we are so proud of them all.”
Geoff Lake, the school’s Rock Challenge choreographer and lead teacher, added: “Our students have worked tirelessly to create, develop and perform our 2015 entry. I would like to thank our supporters, made up from parents and alumni students who have also contributed to this year’s entry, because without them, this success would not be possible. We are one of the few schools to be designated a ‘premier’ school and able to compete in one of the two annual premier finals.
Following our success at the premier final, our students went on to compete in the National Final on Monday 6 July. This is only the third time a National Final has taken place and Oak Academy have qualified for Nationals twice.
Our students gained awards in stage crew, drama, visual enhancement, entertainment, costuming character, performance skill, concept, set design and function, soundtrack, lighting and healthy lifestyle. Although our students didn’t receive a ranking place on the evening, the Rock Challenge team have confirmed Oak Academy – LeAF Campus would have placed 5th in the national competition.
The national final was limited down to 9 schools, from 47 events, 305 schools involving 18,000 competitors have taken part in this year’s events from the north and sound of the country and also Scotland and Isle of Wight, therefore, placing 5th in the entire UK is a great achievement and one that we are incredibly proud of.
The organisers of the event stated that the standard was the highest they have ever seen with all schools really striving for excellent in every area.
DVDs of our performances are available from Oak Academy – LeAF Campus for £5 per performance. Please contact Mr G Lake for more information surrounding DVDs and Rock Challenge.
