Physical Education

In Year 9, students study a core programme which incorporates a broad range of activities through 4 week units of work. They will have a chance to develop skills into specific techniques, and apply them in more challenging situations. Students not only develop their role as a performer but also as officials and coaches when they are encouraged to analyse others performances.

Invasion Games

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Sending and receiving objects with accuracy, over varying distances in full sided invasion games including football, rugby, netball and basketball
  • Dribbling (where appropriate) with control, using trick and turns to create space
  • Developing on and off the ball defending techniques
  • Combining skills and link them to a variety of situations
  • Performing as a player, scorer and umpire with success
  • Applying attacking and defensive strategies to improve their team’s performance
  • Playing a variety of positions in full sided invasion games


Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Understanding the benefits of exercise
  • Improving different components of Health Related Fitness
  • Identifying the major muscles in the body and identifying when they are used
  • An introduction to training thresholds through the measurement of heart rate
  • Developing their mental capacity during fitness training programmes
  • Working individually to develop successful training programmes to improve their fitness


Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Linking a range of complex balances that demonstrate control, fluency and contrasting shapes
  • Evaluating performances taking into account strengths and weaknesses when working with others
  • Applying a variety of dynamics to enhance their performances
  • Including a range of composition ideas, ie canon, unison, when working in a group
  • Suggesting on how a performer they are watching can improve a performance

Outdoor Adventurous activities

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Improving their ability to solve problems both individually and in a team
  • Improving their listening, teamwork and observational skills in order to complete challenges
  • To be able to understand the basics of map and compass navigation to locate control point quickly and efficiently
  • The ability to estimate distances using time and pacing


Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Three main athletic activities of running, jumping and throwing e.g. sprinting, long distance running, javelin, shot, high jump and long jump
  • Sprinting consistently with good technique throughout a race
  • Showing a good understanding of pacing an good tactical awareness over different distances
  • Jumping using a good technique to achieve greater distances
  • Throwing with a side step or run up with good technique
  • Identifying ways to improve components of fitness  required in certain events
  • Developing a good knowledge of techniques to improve others performance

Net Games

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • A range of team and individual sports such as badminton, volleyball, short tennis and table tennis
  • Performing and underarm and overarm serve with power and accuracy
  • Performing a forehand and back hand groundstroke and passes with control and direction
  • Learning to volley with some success in the game
  • The ability to hit or pass the ball with reasonable consistency and accuracy in cooperative rallies/games to outwit their opponents
  • Tactical play to outwit their opponent with a good level of success, hitting into areas of weakness.
  • Scoring a variety of games independently  

Striking and Fielding

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Developing their batting, fielding and bowling techniques in a range of activities such as rounders, cricket and softball
  • Throwing and catching over varying distances with control and accuracy
  • Batting with a high level of success when hitting to gaps and spaces
  • Changing pace of bowl when bowling under arm and applying spin to the ball
  • Retrieving the ball when fielding with accuracy and precision
  • Making a successful contribution to the game whatever position played
