Autumn Term 1:

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Arvo Part; foreground and background
  • Learning about a living composer
  • What it means to work in the music industry
  • The special sound of the music of Arvo Part
  • A piece based on ‘Spiegel im Spiegel’ by Part
  • A performance on the keyboard aiming to improve their skills towards playing with 2 hands.

Autumn Term 2:

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • The Pentatonic Music of China
  • Learning about and composing music for a procession in China
  • Learning to play ‘Sakamoto’ a piece that will lend itself to ensemble performance.

Spring Term 1:

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Song Composing
  • Another opportunity to compose a song after the one they composed in year 8
  • Learning about aspects of the song genre
  • Learning about song composing from songs that they listen to
  • Preparing a performance of their song.

Spring Term 2:

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Reggae
  • Learning about the importance of Bob Marley and how reggae music relates to Rastafarianism
  • Learning to play ‘Walking on the Moon’ by ‘The Police’
  • Preparing a performance that captures the reggae feel.

Summer Term 1:

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Blues, Jazz and Rock n’Roll
  • Learning to improvise in a Blues style
  • Using these skills to capture a rock feel
  • Performing variations on the Jazz standard ‘Little Brown Jug’.

Summer Term 2:

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Film Music
  • Applying all their musical skills to the task of composing music to go with film scenarios in different genres capturing different feels and using different techniques.
