Year 9 French

During Year 9 students continue to broaden the skills and vocabulary base required for progression to Key Stage 4. The introduction of the past tense focuses on giving students the tools to manipulate language and the freedom to say what they want to say. There is also a strong cultural element to the topics studied in Year 9, as students investigate the major sites and attractions in Paris, examine typical French cuisine and research the many differences between life in the UK and life in France.

Autumn Term 1: Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Formation of the past (perfect) tense
  • Reinforcement of the verb avoir
  • Forming past participles
  • Forming questions and negatives in the past
  • Reinforcement of the verb etre
  • Verbs taking etre in the past tense


Autumn Term 2: Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Naming members of the family - describing them
  • Parts of the face
  • Parts of the body
  • How to express "my", "his" and "her"
  • Designing and describing a monster
  • Reinforcement of adjectival agreements


Spring Term 1: Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Foods eaten for breakfast
  • Saying what they usually eat for breakfast and what they ate on a special occasion
  • Saying what they eat for lunch and giving opinions
  • Designing a snack menu for the school canteen
  • Describing their favourite meal


Spring Term 2: Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Items of fruit and vegetables
  • Quantities
  • Buying fruit / vegetables at a market
  • Preparing a shopping list for a picnic / party
  • Ordering items in a café or restaurant
  • Designing a menu for a restaurant

Summer Term 1: Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Planning a visit to Paris - identifying the major sites
  • Transport - Expressing the advantages and disadvantages of different forms
  • Reinforcement of the simple future tense - saying what they are going to visit
  • Reinforcement of the past tense
  • Describing a visit they have been on

Summer Term 2: Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Examining the culture and geography of modern-day France
  • Physical geography - regions, rivers, mountains, cities
  • Major festivals and holidays
  • Traditional food and drinks including regional specialities
  • Major tourist attractions
  • Major French companies and what they produce
  • Differences between the English and French education system
