Physical Education

In Year 8, students study a core programme which incorporates a broad range of activities through 6 week units of work. They will have a chance to develop skills into specific techniques, and apply them in more challenging situations. Students not only develop the role as a performer but also as officials and coaches when they are encouraged to analyse others’ performances.

Invasion Games

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Sending and receiving objects with accuracy, over varying distances in invasion games including football, rugby, netball and basketball
  • Dribbling (where appropriate) using both feet and hands with control
  • Combining skills and link them to a variety of situations
  • Applying basic rules and conventions of small sided invasion games
  • Understanding  the principles of attack and defence through taking on a variety of positions in small sided invasion games

HRE

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Understanding the benefits of exercise
  • The components of Health Related Fitness
  • The importance of a warm up and cool down
  • The importance of raising their heart rate for sustained periods of times on a regular basis
  • Developing their mental capacity during cardiovascular activities

Gymnastics

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Their ability to link skills, including twisting and turning with control and fluency
  • The importance of including a change of dynamics in their performances
  • The use of canon and unison throughout their performances
  • Transferring their skills and creating their own routines on apparatus, performing confidently
  • Using their own criteria to judge a performance  
  • Sharing different ideas that will lead to individuals improving their performance in small group sequences

Outdoor Adventurous activities

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Improving their ability to solve problems both individually and in a team
  • Improving their listening, teamwork and observational skills in order to complete challenges
  • To be able to understand the basics of map and compass navigation
  • The ability to estimate distances using time and pacing

Athletics

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Three main athletic activities of running, jumping and throwing e.g. sprinting, long distance running, javelin, shot, high jump and long jump
  • Sprint starts using a recognised starting technique driving from the arms and legs
  • Pacing themselves in middle distance events with some awareness of tactics required
  • Jumping from a longer run up with power to create good flight
  • Throwing with good technique and control, creating power from a short run up or side step
  • Ways of improving the components required in certain events
  • Being able to identify key points to help areas for improvement in own performance and others

Net Games

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • A range of team and individual sports such as badminton, volleyball, short tennis and table tennis
  • Performing an underarm serve with placement
  • Knowing how to perform a forehand and back hand groundstroke (where appropriate) and a volley/dig
  • Maintain a short groundstroke  rally with a partner where appropriate
  • The ability to  hit or pass the ball with reasonable consistency and accuracy in cooperative rallies/games
  • The understanding of basic tactics and strategies of the game, thinking about service placement and hitting to corners or space
  • Having a basic knowledge of rules and court layout
  • Scoring games with assistance

Striking and Fielding

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Developing their batting, fielding and bowling techniques in a range of activities such as rounders, cricket and softball
  • A consistent hitting action showing an attempt to direct the ball into space.
  • Bowling the ball accurately showing a variation in speed and height.
  • Effectively using the long barrier technique within practices and identifying when to use it.
  • Making an effective contribution to the game, fielding in at least two positions.
