Autumn Term 1:

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • The different types of energy.
  • How fossil fuels are formed and how they are used by humans.
  • What the differences are between Non-Renewable and Renewable energy.
  • The impact of Global Warming and the use of fossil fuels.
  • How realistic Renewable energy alternatives are to us.
  • A case study of a wind farm development off Bournemouth.

 

Autumn Term 2:

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Being able to classify different types of crime
  • Recognising high risk areas of crime in the local area.
  • Explaining links between crime and the built environment.
  • Showing how maps can be used to record crime and identify the patterns and causes.
  • Describing how to reduce crime through planning.
  • Understanding how international crime is organised, using the poppy trade in Asia as an example.

 

Spring Term 1:

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Understanding and interpreting weather maps.
  • Explaining key terms such as atmosphere, pressure, temperature and wind direction.
  • Understanding how to measure the weather.
  • Identifying some of the different cloud types.
  • Explaining the importance of weather in our everyday lives.
  • Being able to differentiate between the effects of Low and High pressure weather systems.

 

Spring Term 2:

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Knowing how and why the sea shapes our coastline
  • Being able to understand what the main features caused by erosion and deposition are.
  • Explaining how wave cut platforms are formed.
  • What happens to headlands that are exposed to the sea.
  • Explaining and describing what can be done to protect our coastline.
  • Looking at coastal protection along the Dorset coastline.

 

Summer Term 1:

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Understanding what the living parts of an ecosystem are.
  • To be able to understand and explain how plants and animals adapt to their environments.
  • Producing a case study of a desert ecosystem
  • Explaining what human activity is doing to damage the tropical rainforests.
  • How human activity in the Savannah is damaging the farmland.
  • How we can farm in a sustainable way

 

Summer Term 2:

Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Locating a range of places in Brazil and being able to describe what they are like.
  • Looking at a wide range of environments in Brazil and being able to describe their main features in some depth and detail.
  • To be able to describe and explain the physical and human features that give rise to the distinctive character of places.
  • To explain how places in Brazil can be interdependent and rely on links with other places around the world.
  • Comparing two regions of Brazil and being able to describe their main features.
  • How the history of the Slave Trade and the plantations has determined the culture that exists in Brazil today.

Geography important dates:

Homework will be issued weekly and will be written in the student planners.
Revision for end of module assessment tests. Students will be notified in advance.
