Autumn Term 1:

Your child will be studying and focusing on: Mime

Students gain an understanding of the basic drams skills, exploring the 5C’s (cooperation, confidence, communication, control and concentration). Students will study mirror mime to underpin and develop their knowledge of new drama skills. This unit extends students’ skills by using the stimulus ‘Duck Soup’ by the Marx Brothers. Students will recreate the mirror scene using all of the skills that have been taught in previous lessons.

Autumn Term 2:

Your child will be studying and focusing on: Pantomime

This unit explores the Pantomime genre.  Students gain an understanding of stock characters, the essential ingredients of Pantomime and the theatrical conventions associated with it. The unit requires students to learn a Pantomime script (link to module 3 in dance) and they are required to learn their lines. The teacher may allow the class to work in groups or may like to develop a whole class piece. Students will also explore various technical elements and some students may like to develop their skills in production jobs including; costume, lighting set and props.

Spring Term 1:

Your child will be studying and focusing on: Physical Theatre

Students will explore ‘A journey to the cosmos’, using their bodies to create sets and props. Revisiting the 5C’s, they will work as a team to create letters and words, thinking about the shapes they can create. This unit will develop and students will create household appliances and futuristic machines. They will explore; shape, movement and sound using their bodies and voices to create soundscapes.

Spring Term 2:

Your child will be studying and focusing on: Character

Students explore how to develop characterisation using new techniques; role on the wall, improvisation, hot seating and thoughts aloud.
This unit will allow students to take ownership of developing a character and consider the use of voice, physical characterisation and facial expression.
The skills learned will enable students to create characters in future units of work.

Summer Term 1:

Your child will be studying and focusing on: Silent Movies

This unit continues to promote the 5C’s and build on skills being taught in the previous units.  The students watch a selection of black and white movies and recreate moments that inspire them. This is a skills driven unit that explores; action and reaction, exaggeration, comical interaction, facial expression, physical characterisation and gesture.

Summer Term 2:

Your child will be studying and focusing on: Not Now Bernard

This unit explores text and stimulus, using the book Not Now Bernard as a starting point. Students use the drama skills; freeze frames, thoughts aloud, hot seating, still image and characterisation. This unit will be revisited in the Year 8 unit of work, Storytelling and build on the skills taught in Year 7.
