Triple Science

Autumn Term 1:

Your child will be preparing for and carrying out their remaining two controlled assessments to include;

  • Heat loss from the body
  • The effect of salt on the temperature of water

During the preparation for this your child will also study the following two modules; Chemicals of the natural environment and Chemical synthesis. This will include;

  • What types of chemicals make up the atmosphere?
  • What reactions happen in the hydrosphere?
  • What types of chemicals make up the Earth’s lithosphere?
  • How can we extract useful metals from minerals?
  • Chemicals and why we need them
  • Planning, carrying out and controlling a chemical synthesis

Autumn Term 2:

Your child will be studying and focusing on the following topics

Growth & Development, Brain and Mind

  • How do organisms develop?
  • How does an organism produce new cells?
  • How do genes control growth and development within the cell.
  • How do animals respond to changes in their environment?
  • How is information passed through the nervous system?
  • Can reflex responses be learned?
  • How do humans develop more complex behaviour?

Radioactive Materials

  • Why are some materials radioactive?
  • How can radioactive materials be used and handled safely, including wastes?

Electrical circuits

  • Electrical current – a flow of what?
  • What determines the size of the current in an electric circuit and the energy it transfers?
  • How do parallel and series circuits work?
  • How is mains electricity produced?  How are voltages and currents induced?
  • How do electric motors work?

Your child will then study for the Biology, Chemistry and Physics mocks exams, to include
Biology    Chemistry    Physics

  • Processes of Life
  • Growth and Development
  • Brain and Mind
  • Chemical patterns
  • Chemicals of the natural environment
  • Chemical Synthesis
  • Explaining Motion
  • Electrical circuits
  • Radioactive materials

These will be sat straight after the Christmas break

Spring Term 1:

Your child will be studying and focusing on:  Further Biology, Chemistry & Physics

  • Peak performance – movement and exercise
  • Peak performance – circulation
  • Peak performance – energy balance
  • What can we learn from natural ecosystems?
  • Green chemistry
  • Alcohols, carboxylic acids and esters
  • Energy changes in chemistry
  • Reversible reactions and equilibria
  • Analysis
  • Naked eye astronomy
  • Light, telescopes and images
  • Mapping the Universe
  • The Sun, the stars and their surroundings
  • The astronomy community

Spring Term 2:

Your child will be revising and preparing  for the following Exams

  • You and Your Genes
  • Keeping Healthy
  • Life on Earth
  • Air Quality
  • Material Choices
  • Chemicals in our Lives
  • Planet and the Universe
  • Radiation and Life
  • Sustainable Energy

Summer Term:

Your child will be revising and preparing for the following exams:

  • Life Processes
  • Growth and Development
  • Brain and Mind
  • Further Biology
  • Chemical Patterns
  • Chemicals of the Natural Environment
  • Chemical Synthesis
  • Further Chemistry
  • Explaining Motion
  • Electrical Circuits
  • Radioactive Materials
  • Further Physics

Students will also take the first of the GCSE exams.  The exam will be 1 hour in length.
