Physical Education

Every module students will rotate around the different specialised subject areas within GCSE Physical Education, giving them the opportunity to explore both the theoretical and practical aspects of the course.

Year 11 term 1

Students will be able to:

Analysis of performance

  • Complete an analysis of performance in one physical activity they are undertaking as part of their assessment.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the rules, regulations and terminology in their selected activity.
  • Observe and analyse their performance in physical activity and use this to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Use their analysis to plan strategies, tactics and practices to improve their skills and performances.

Physical activity and your healthy mind and body (unit 1.2.1)

  • Describe different body types and explain the effects each can have on participation and performance.
  • Outline why, and how, expected and optimum weight varies and explain how this can affect participation in physical activity.
  • Define the terms anorexic, obese, overfat, overweight and underweight and explain how they may impact sustained involvement in physical activity.
  • Explain the effects of smoking and alcohol on health and performance.
  • Identify and describe the different categories of drug and their effects on health, wellbeing and performance.

Year 11 term 2

Students will be able to:

A healthy active lifestyle and your cardiovascular system (unit 1:2:2)

  • Understand the immediate and short-term effects of participation in exercise and physical activity on the cardiovascular system.
  • Understand the long-term effects of participation in exercise and physical activity on the cardiovascular system.
  • Understand the effect of diet and drugs on the cardiovascular system.

A healthy active lifestyle and your respiratory system (unit 1:2:3)

  • Understand the immediate and short-term effects of participation in exercise and physical activity on the respiratory system.
  • Understand the long-term effects of participation in exercise and physical activity on the respiratory system.
  • Understand the effect of drugs on the respiratory system.

A healthy active lifestyle and your muscular system (unit 1:2:4)

  • Identify the major muscles in the body and describe their roles in movement.
  • Understand the short and long-term effects of participation in exercise and physical activity on the respiratory system.
  • Understand the effect of diet and drugs on the muscular system.

A healthy active lifestyle and your skeletal system (unit 1:2:5)

  • Describe the role of the skeletal system during physical activity.
  • Identify the range of movement available at each joint.
  • Understand the long-term effects of participation in exercise and physical activity on the skeletal system.
  • Describe potential injuries to the skeletal system and their treatments.

Year 11 term 3  

Students will be preparing for their practical moderation day and revising for the final theory examination.

Sports/ activities covered in year 11

GCSE PE has a practical component worth 60% of the overall examination grade. An example of some of the practical activities pupils follow are listed below.

  • Tennis leadership

  • Individual specialist sport
