Autumn Term 1:
Your child will be studying and focusing on: Descriptive Music - Area of study 4
Students will learn about the music that tells stories through listening and analysis of orchestral music and film music. They will perform pieces of programme music and will compose their own assessed piece of programme music. They will also learn to perform in a band, playing and singing in tune and in time together and learn some of the techniques associated with preparing performances.
Autumn Term 2:
Your child will be studying and focusing on: My Music – Area of study 1
Students will learn about their own instrument/voice and about some of the techniques that it uses. They will learn to identify these from listening, learn to understand the effects these techniques have on a listener and learn to use them themselves. Students will start to learn pieces of music for their own instrument/voice for an assessed performance, learning how to practise their instrument/voice effectively.
Spring Term 1:
Your child will be studying and focusing on: Shared Music – Area of study 2
Students will continue to learn to perform in a band or a smaller ensemble. They will also learn how to compose music for their ensemble. They will compose and perform one such piece for an assessment. Additionally students will learn how to take the Creative Task that forms 15% of their final GCSE in Music.
Spring Term 2:
Your child will be studying and focusing on: Dance Music – Area of study 3
Students will learn about 5 styles of dance music through short composing tasks and listening and note-taking. Students will have a second chance to compose a Jig using the programme ‘Finale Notepad’ in order to show their understanding of dance music. They will continue to work at the Creative Task.
Summer Term 1:
Your child will be studying and focusing on: Year 10 Mock examination
Students will revise for the mock listening examination that will feature Dance Music in particular. They will also take an examination in composing, the Creative Task and a solo performance. This will be reviewed in detail with targets set to indicate the way forward for Year 11.
Summer Term 2:
Your child will be studying and focusing on: Final controlled assessments for GCSE
Students will take 2 controlled Assessments in year 11. They will pull together all the threads and skills that are required for these in readiness for the next academic year. They will also focus on vocabulary learning for the 4 areas of study and on solo and ensemble performing skills which form the basis of the controlled assessments.

Music important dates:
May 2015 – Mock Examination in Music. The whole month will be used for this.
