Year 10 French

For Key Stage 4 students, topics covered include Media and Culture; Sport and Leisure; Travel and Tourism; Business, Work and Employment.  Students are assessed in each of the four skills:The Listening and Reading assessments are by externally set examinations at the end of Year 11.The Writing assessment consists of two pieces of written coursework which will be done under controlled conditions in the classroom.  The Speaking assessment consists of two oral tasks. These again will be done under controlled conditions in the classroom.Regular booster sessions and revision classes are provided by the MFL Department to support students. Students may also choose to take part in the E-Mentoring Scheme, whereby they are paired with a student mentor from Southampton University.

Autumn Term 1: Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Saying where they are from (using "en", "au" and the names of countries)
  • Expressing likes and dislikes (with connectives and intensifiers)
  • Saying how they get on with their family (using possessive adjectives "mon", "ma" and "mes")
  • Saying what jobs their parents do (using masculine and feminine agreements)
  • Describing friends (using sentence starters, connectives, intensifiers and adjective agrrements)
  • Describing leisure activities in the past (using the perfect tense with avoir and etre verbs)

Autumn Term 2: Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Discussing TV and cinema (using plural nouns with likes and dislikes)
  • Arranging to go out (using question words)
  • Explaining why they can't do something (using modal verbs)
  • Giving opinions about something they have done (using the past tense)
  • Describing a sporting event (using the past tense with opinions, connectives and intensifiers)

Spring Term 1: Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Asking questions about where people live (using intonation, est ce-que, subject-verb inversion, question words)
  • Describing where they live (using "depuis" to say how long for)
  • Describing a town (using "il y a" and "il n'y a pas de")
  • Describing facilities in a town (using "on peut" and "on ne peut pas")
  • Giving opinions about an area using sentence starters, connectives and intensifiers
  • Describe where they would like to live in the future (using the future tense)


Spring Term 2: Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Asking for and giving directions (using "ou est", "ou sont")
  • Shopping for food (using "du", "de la", de l'" and "des")
  • Describing the location of shops (using prepositions)
  • Saying what shopping they need and where to get it (using "pour + infinitive" and "il faut")

Summer Term 1: Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Talking about fashion and clothes (using adjective agreements; expressing likes and dislikes using connectives and intensifiers)
  • Making travel arrangements (using the 24 hour clock)
  • Describing a special occasion (using the perfect tense with avoir and etre)
  • Revising and revisiting elements from Modules 1-
  • Preparing for end of year examinations in Listening and Reading

Summer Term 2: Your child will be studying and focusing on:

  • Preparing Controlled Assessment 1 in Speaking / Writing
  • Tasks may vary from class to class, please contact your child's French teacher for further details.
